The mural, Rise is a representation of strength, hope, and growth. Through a lush landscape, we want the viewer to feel a powerful burning to grow. Mountains are shown rising, butterflies in flight, a child in-journey, and flowers in bloom. It speaks to the viewer, “that with hope, you will too.”

As the Leader of the Mural team, I worked together with my peers to Collapse ideas and concepts into an established narrative, incorporating Newark voices into the visual language, and utilizing, upgrading, and creating illustrations. From the mural, several applications Were created to extend to wayfinding and extensions.

The Design Consortium (DC) is a student/faculty creative studio rooted in a collaboratively engaged design process. Within this framework, design faculty & students partner with community residents, organizations, educational institutions, and/or local activists to achieve a common goal. The traditional notion of designers “serving” clients is replaced by equal partners who — only through their work together — can create impact. This inclusive design model acknowledges that each participant brings exceptional knowledge of the relationship without which the work would not succeed.

Working for the City of Newark’s Office of Homelessness, the design Design Consortium students/faculty work to design a system of empowerment visuals for The Miller Street Pathways to Housing Center.

Campaign Elements

In each mural plane, a suite of elements contributes to the narrative scape, which includes:

+ Illustrated flowers, plants, and growth abstractions that create a lush, vibrant, positive space. For example Peace Lilies which are givers of peace, Calathea Plants which represent

new beginnings, and Hibiscus flowers which portray happiness.

+ A gradient is used to share a literal interpretation of change, in some cases portraying a sunrise, but also to harness moments of warmth, embrace, and peace.

+ Colors that exemplify warmth such as oranges, reds, deep purples, and greens symbolize renewal.

+ Silhouettes center people and reinforce that this is a campaign about HUMANS-in-need.

Elements in Use

In large type, “Love all the things that make you strong” is presented from Answers in Progress: Amiri Baraka’s Lyrical Manifesto for Life. This statement sets forth a number of strong Newark voices which include Dr. Salamishah Tillet, the late Whitney Houston, and Mia X.
